{"id":1381,"date":"2020-06-11T10:28:10","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T10:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/feedmethewordtoday.com\/?p=1381"},"modified":"2020-07-24T22:28:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T22:28:23","slug":"george-floyds-death-was-a-turning-point-ignited-something-in-me-joel-osteen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/udiwonder.com\/word\/george-floyds-death-was-a-turning-point-ignited-something-in-me-joel-osteen\/","title":{"rendered":"George Floyd&#8217;s death was a &#8216;turning point,&#8217; &#8216;ignited something in me&#8217; &#8211; Joel Osteen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Days after marching with thousands in a George Floyd demonstration in downtown Houston, Texas, televangelist <a href=\"http:\/\/udiwonder.com\/word\/tag\/joel-osteen\/\">Joel Osteen<\/a> said Monday that he thinks Floyd\u2019s death represents a \u201cturning point\u201d and the incident \u201cignited\u201d something in him.<\/p>\n<p>The 57-year-old <a href=\"http:\/\/udiwonder.com\/word\/tag\/joel-osteen\/\">Joel Osteen<\/a>, who rarely makes his political opinions public, told African American Pastor John Gray during an hour-long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W9_s5gdp2Is\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">conversation on race<\/a>\u00a0and the church Monday that issues of injustice and inequality are not political issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stay away from political issues but this is not a political issue,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/udiwonder.com\/word\/tag\/joel-osteen\/\">Joel Osteen<\/a> said. \u201cThis is a human issue. Wrong is wrong and we want to lend our voice \u2014 you know this \u2014 but to stand with our black brothers and sisters and stand against injustice and the things that have been wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joel Osteen, the senior pastor of Houston\u2019s Lakewood Church, one of America\u2019s largest evangelical megachurches, was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChauncyOnTV\/status\/1267925361200902144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1267925361200902144&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fabc13.com%2Fgeorge-floyd-city-hall-march-trae-tha-truth%2F6227626%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">among many<\/a> who marched last Tuesday in Houston against instances of police brutality and to pay tribute to George Floyd.<\/p>\n<p>Floyd was a 46-year-old Houston native\u00a0who had moved to Minnesota to start a new life following several incarcerations, including a felony conviction for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in Texas. On Memorial Day, a\u00a0store clerk at Cup Foods in Minneapolis called 911 to report that Floyd had given him a\u00a0counterfeit $20 bill to purchase cigarettes and that he appeared to be intoxicated.<\/p>\n<p>After he was arrested and handcuffed at the scene,\u00a0Floyd refused to get into the squad car, &#8220;fell to the ground, and told the officers he was claustrophobic,&#8221; according to\u00a0details in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hennepinattorney.org\/-\/media\/Attorney\/Derek-Chauvin-Criminal-Complaint.pdf?la=en&amp;hash=1E453C8A0834E00805D32DA7132616A1D28F7AD5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">criminal complaint against former officer Derek Chauvin<\/a>\u00a0who was later fired and charged with second-degree murder for kneeling on Floyd&#8217;s neck for over eight minutes, even after Floyd had stopped moving and breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Video of the incident sparked nationwide protests and renewed condemnation of instances of police brutality and calls for defunding police departments.<\/p>\n<p>Joel Osteen also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/tony-evans-joel-osteen-kari-jobe-join-blackout-tuesday-in-solidarity-against-injustice.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">participated<\/a> in #BlackOutTuesday, a social media hashtag movement in which users posted pictures of black squares to show solidarity with the African American community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know we can do better. I think this incident with George Floyd \u2014 and it&#8217;s not just him, it is what it represents \u2014 I feel like it is a turning point,\u201d Joel Osteen told Gray. \u201cIt has ignited something in me about, as I said, what can we do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"A Conversation With Pastors John Gray &amp; Joel Osteen\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W9_s5gdp2Is?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Joel Osteen stressed that as \u201cterrible\u201d as George Floyd death was, he is hopeful because \u201cGod takes what is meant for harm and He knows how to bring some good out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I do believe that we have to be open and acknowledge the pain, seek to understand, grieve with you and realize that you have it more difficult than us,\u201d Osteen told Gray, who served as an associate pastor at Lakewood before moving on to lead Relentless Church in South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen again, God knew you were going to be you and He knew I was going to be me. So let\u2019s take what we have and let\u2019s move forward with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Osteen stressed that Lakewood Church, which founded by his father, has stood in unity for 60 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou couldn\u2019t possibly know the power of this moment, not only for the body of Christ but for particularly, black people,\u201d Gray told Osteen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many people in the African American community who love you and love your wife and love the work of this church. They may know you from a television broadcast, but I have had the honor and privilege of being in a relationship with you for over 11 years now. Having seen your life up front and up close. And to know your heart is one thing, but to have this moment for other people to kind of step into what I know and what I believe is a critical moment for leaders to get off the fence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gray agreed that the issue at hand is not political, but rather \u201cspiritual\u201d and \u201chuman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you to not just be a global pastor, but the pastor Lakewood Church in Houston, where George Floyd was from \u2014 Third Ward \u2014 it was critical for you to have a moment like this so we can talk about the pain,\u201d Gray said to Joel Osteen.<\/p>\n<p>Osteen recalled an incident that occurred with his wife, Victoria, at a bookstore at Houston Community College a few years back that opened his eyes to the hardships that many black and impoverished people face across the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>He said his wife went down to the college bookstore to buy books for their kids who were taking classes at the school while they were still in high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe place was packed with young African American kids with people in this itty bitty room. Victoria walks in, this white beautiful girl, and she gets in the back of the line. They asked what she was there for. She said she was there to get some books for her children,\u201d Osteen explained. \u201cThey said, \u2018Do you have cash, have money?\u2019 She said, \u2018Yeah, I have money. I am going to buy them.\u2019 They said, \u2018you can go to the front of the line. We are all waiting for financial aid.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought, how can they get ahead when they are sitting there waiting in line and waiting for somebody to give them a $40 book,\u201d Osteen continued. \u201cIt&#8217;s hard enough to raise kids and get ahead these days, [but] when you see how much is against some people you think, \u2018how can\u00a0that happen?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Osteen again reiterated that \u201cwe are here to learn how can we do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gray suggested that churches that have access to capital and resources can look to partner with colleges and commit a certain portion of their mission budgets to help impoverished people who are trying to better their lives through education. He suggested churches should partner with historically black colleges or universities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that is something that should be considered. Because when we think of missions, we think of places that don\u2019t have access to resources and capital, where people have been disenfranchised. Well, if that is really what missions is about, you can look down the street,\u201d Gray said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that churches, particularly white churches that have money in the bank, \u2026 you can help with your relationships: you know the bank president, you know the mayor, the county commissioner, you know the president of that college. Tell some of these corporations to put some money into a pool and let\u2019s get 100 kids and let\u2019s pay for their books and let\u2019s give them a stipend so they don\u2019t have to go to work and they can just focus on their education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gray stressed that if several churches did such a thing in every community, there would be an \u201cimmediate response and return on investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you said about Pastor Victoria\u2019s experience at Houston Community College is critical, because you got kids in line who have the stress of trying to learn with the added burden of not being able to have the financial resources to do so without having to take two or three jobs and student loans that are going to add debt,\u201d Gray said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo even after they get that degree, they are going to be paying for that degree before they can put a down payment on a house.
